Located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, the apartment occupies a half-floor of a classic early 20th-century loft. The renovation minimizes partitions and concentrates private rooms on the north side of the apartment, organizing the living spaces into a contiguous zone and pulling daylight deep into the 2,220-square-foot loft. Historic details—timber columns and beams, cast iron capitals, and timber ceiling joists—are left raw and exposed as an homage to the spirit of the New York City artists’ loft.
Two custom dark-stained ash wood storage objects are treated as refined furniture pieces that provide structure to the open-plan kitchen, dining area, and living room. At the center of the apartment, a custom raked plaster volume contains the bathrooms and utility spaces. Large sliding wall planes throughout the apartment allow spaces to open or close to one another, while white perimeter walls enhance brightness throughout. Reclaimed antique heart pine floors pair with white-pigmented ash wood closets and casework. A monolithic Ceppo di Gré marble island anchors the kitchen. Recessed stone niches invite congregation, and loose seating that rests on stone embedded in the wood floor reinforces the island’s object-like quality.
Soft textured plaster walls showcase an interplay of light and shadow against the apartment’s more refined, elemental pieces
