Perched atop a 8-acre hillside property in Dutchess County, this new home and separate garage and pilates studio is designed to nestle amongst the dense and extensive forest characteristic of this region. For the house, a gabled roof structure with deep overhangs provides protected cover along the length of both sides, while the pilates studio forms an embedded cube in the rolling landscape. A gravel entry court provides access to both structures and connects to a lap pool.

In contrast to the dark exterior, the interior is awash in natural light from calibrated windows and doors that open up towards the landscape while maintaining privacy. Stretching from one end to the other, the gabled roofline creates a large interior double height space bound by two independent volumetric elements (kitchen, fireplace) that contain the primary living space.

Large, panoramic windows frame the forest on one side and dramatic valley views on the other.

The simple geometric volumes are clad with corrugated metal for both the vertical and roof surfaces to create a more monolithic reading against the landscape. An articulated volume made of board-formed concrete signifies entry and creates a proper entry threshold. The interiors, completed with a combination of concrete floors and ash wood cladding and casework combined with marble stone elements create a refined material palette.
