North Salem Farm
Farmhouses, barns, sheds and other agricultural structures are part of the existing buildings on this property and define the language of this area in Westchester County. The design for North Salem Farm uses these existing structures as a starting point but they are reconstituted to create a new, modern farm. Three gabled volumes are oriented side by side together to create an ensemble that engages the landscape in different ways. The approach side is defined by mostly solid facades and an entry court set within a rolling native meadow. The rear side is focused on the panoramic view of the surrounding property with the pond and hillside beyond. Zinc roofing and dark green stained cedar siding with a varied batten pattern echo the typical agrarian vernacular but with contemporary detailing. Inside, the existing barn structure is rebuilt with new trusses to great a central communal wing bracketed by a fireplace/bookcase wall, and a guest wing volume. Large windows frame views to the landscape while zinc clad elements organize the spaces within.
